Often the best way to see a city is to be guided by an expert, and Shanghai's no different. Heritage society Historic Shanghai has been piecing together and passing on stories from the city’s Golden Age and beyond for two decades. Co-founded by Shanghai history enthusiasts Patrick Cranley, Tess Johnston and Tina Kanagaratnam in a bid to help preserve and raise awareness of the city’s vibrant past, the society hosts talks and walks that sprawl all over town.

We’ve got a pair of tickets for one of the society’s springtime walking tours to give away (valid to use until Thursday 30 April). Upcoming walks will cover the lost lanes of Laoximen, the secrets behind the Bund, the tales that built the French Concession and a forgotten Chinese Art Deco city. You might visit an overgrown 1920s suburban enclave or the nightclubs of yore, delve into Chinese Shanghai, French Shanghai, American Shanghai, Russian Shanghai, Jewish Shanghai and meet the characters who built it, lived, loved and worked here.
