The Best Things to Do in March (Part I)

This month’s looking to be a big one!

March might have just begun, but our social schedule is already packed with things to do, from celebrating the incredible women in our lives to clinking pints in honour of the patron saint of Ireland.
So, mark your calendars — this month’s looking to be a big one!

01 Dames & Drinks: An Asian Spice Route Rally

🗓️ Friday, March 7

⏰ 8 - 11 PM

📍1929 by Guillaume Galliot, 59 Maoming Road, Huangpu

This three-hour takeover will showcase the skills of four standout female bartenders from Hong Kong, Singapore, Saigon, and Shanghai. Expect a flavorful journey through Asia, with each hour spotlighting a different guest bartender and her respective creations, but not forgetting special cocktails from 1929’s own ‘Spice Road’ menu.

02 Bread For All, Roses Too

🗓️ Fri - Sun, March 7 - 9

⏰ 11 AM - 8 PM

📍 Columbia Circle, 1262 West Yan’an Road, Changning

🎟️ Free entry

A must for anyone cuckoo for carbs, the BreadWander Festival is back by popular demand!

As we all know, this city is absolutely mad for baked goods, and a wide range of treats, from the cinnamon roll to contemporary creations like the crookie, have enjoyed their fair share of the spotlight in Shanghai. Dive dough first into the art and culture of bread-making by way of live demonstrations, tastings and more.

TIME OUT TIP: This edition of BreadWander pays homage to and is named after a line in a speech by respected women’s suffrage activist Helen Todd.

03 Women's Day with AZUL

🗓️ Saturday, March 8

📍 AZUL affiliated restaurants

Ladies, claim a complimentary glass of sparkling wine and a dessert at any of AZUL’s affiliate restaurants this Saturday.

For those looking to really turn it up, swing by AZUL Shankangli for a free-flow of 12 signature cocktails for three whole hours (6 - 9 PM) and a live DJ set. Sorry dudes, the free stuff is only for the girls, but don’t let that keep you from celebrating with your favourite gal pals!

04 'Women of Old Shanghai' walk

🗓️ Saturday, March 8

⏰ Starts at 10 AM

📍 Meeting point disclosed to participants

🎟️ 200 RMB for members | 300 RMB for non-members

Get inspired by the histories of iconic women, both the famous and the forgotten, who once lived and dreamed in Shanghai.

This International Women’s Day, our favourite tour organisers at Historic Shanghai are honouring the likes of pioneering textile artist Huang Daopo; literary icon Eileen Chang; Shanghai’s most liberated woman, Laura Kadoorie; etc. — showgirls, revolutionaries, spies, and more!

See where they lived, worked and played, and learn about the legacy they left behind in the unique environment of Old Shanghai. RSVP by emailing info@historic-shanghai.com.

05 'FEM FM' Open Mic

🗓️ Saturday, March 8

⏰ 9 PM onwards

📍 Cedar Kitchen, 272 Julu Road, Huangpu

🎟️ 68 at the door

Hosted by newly renovated underground space Cedar Kitchen, this initiative was born from a recognition of the limitations women often face in entertainment spaces, from unwanted interruptions to unfair labeling and a lack of representation.

'FEM FM' blends a talk show with an electronic music party.

Whether it’s challenging stereotypes surrounding female DJs or pushing back against the dismissal of women-centric stories, the event’s lineup looks to be as fun as it is meaningful.

06 Ginger Root's SHINBANGUMI Asia tour

🗓️ Monday, March 10

⏰ Starts at 7 PM

📍 Bandai Namco, 179 Yichang Road, Putuo

🎟️ 380 RMB general | 680 RMB VIP

2025 is the year that fully scratches Shanghai’s itch for live music, with musicians across all genres and from all corners of the world congregating in our city, including indie soul artist Ginger Root from California.

From the laid-back grooves of "Veneer" to the smooth, funky rhythms of "Loretta," Ginger Root's songs feel both nostalgic and refreshingly modern.

They're sure to have you moving your feet to the beat.

07 Uncanny Valley by Rimini Protokoll

🗓️ Fri - Sun, March 14 - 16

⏰ 2, 4:30 & 7:30 PM

📍Theatre YOUNG, 1155 Kongjiang Road

7

AI has intercepted visual art (see this article's opening image!), written art, and the performing arts too, as evidenced by Rimini Protokoll’s latest production.

An animatronic double of author Thomas Melle sets the stage for a riveting exploration of identity, selfhood, and the intricate bond between creator and creation.

Presented in German, Chinese, or English via earphones, the experience is as accessible as it is thought-provoking. This isn’t just theatre — it’s a philosophical journey that will linger long after the curtain falls.

08 St. Patrick's Day at The Blarney Stone

🗓️ Sat - Mon, March 15 - 17

⏰ 11 AM onwards

📍 The Blarney Stone, 77 Yongkang Road, Xuhui

St. Paddy’s Day is just around the corner and what better place to celebrate than at Shanghai’s favourite Irish pub?

Stop by on Saturday, Sunday, and even Monday for specials on Guinness, Jameson cocktails, green beer and more.

If you didn’t spend Paddy’s Day in a pub, did you really celebrate?

09 St. Patrick’s Day at Butler & White’s

🗓️ Saturday, March 15

⏰ 6:30 PM until late

📍 Butler and White’s, Lane 7, Taikang Road, Huangpu

🎟️ Free entry

☎️ 18916603306

One of our favourite spots in Tianzifang (see video below), Butler & White’s will keep the Guinness flowing this St. Paddy’s Day weekend — free-flowing to be exact, with three hours of unlimited Guinness for just 268 RMB. Irish band Doctor Midnight will set the mood with a live set from 6:30 PM onwards.

Thankfully, the restaurant has relocated to the first floor, so there’s less chance of taking a tumble down the stairs after too much merrymaking.
