You're still number one in our hearts, Speak Low

Only a couple of weeks after Shanghai's F&B scene was all caught up in Michelin fever, it's now onto the next international accolade: The World's 50 Best Bars 2018. Essentially the Oscars of the drinking world, The World's 50 Best Bars list was announced in London last week, with one familiar face keeping a spot...

That's right, Shanghai's beloved speakeasy from Japanese mix master Shingo Gokan, Speak Low came in at number 20. While that's a drop in ten places from last year, when it became the first bar from Mainland China to make it into the top ten, it's still impressive – especially given that two years ago, Speak Low was the first Mainland Chinese entry to have cracked into The World's 50 Best Bars, placing 15th. And, whatever, you're still number one to us Speak Low. Gokan's Sober Company also just missed a spot on The World's 50 Best list, coming in at number 51.

As for the top spot, London's Dandelayn usurped its fellow London-based American Bar to claim the title of this year's number one. For more on that, take a look at the full list here.

Overall, regionally Asia continues to have a strong showing, with ten venues making the 2018 list, up from eight last year. Hong Kong's The Old Man, which wrestled the number ten spot from Speak Low, was one of three Asian bars in the top ten, with Singapore's Manhattan and Atlas placing at number three and eight, respectively.

It might be a slip for Shanghai, but we say this every year and we still believe it: New York and London, we're coming for ya.
