Shanghai is fast becoming a must-visit spot for the world's top comics, with another set to cross China's comedy capital off his performance bucket list. Theo Von, as seen on Netflix, Comedy Central and more will be here next week (Fri 13 and Sat 14) for two shows.
Hailed by Joe Rogan as 'one of the funniest guys in America' and alliteratively described by the Huffington Post as 'hellaciously hilarious', Von shot to fame at the age of 19 as a contestant on MTV's reality game show Road Rules: Maximum Velocity Tour before going on to host TBS hidden camera show Deal With It. He's also notably worked on shows such as Inside Amy Schumer and Why? With Hannibal Buress.
'Something bugging you, bro?'
As a stand-up, he's plied his trade on Last Comic Standing
and Live at Gotham
and his comedy album 30lb Bag of Hamster Bones
topped the iTunes comedy charts in 2017. You can also find his special No Offense
on Netflix. Following a show in Xiamen on Thursday 12, he will be performing at Cages
next Friday 13 before heading up Comedy UN
on Saturday 14.
We caught up with the man himself ahead of his trip to China and you can catch a taste of his comedy in the clip below. Warning: it's not for the prudish...
Have you been to China before? What are your perceptions of the country?
I have been to Shanghai before. I've been to Hong Kong as well. Beautiful, bustling, ravenous and mysterious. I loved it. I'm honoured to be able to visit and perform in such a vibrant land.
What are you most looking forward to about coming to Shanghai and performing here?
Just being out of my own country for a while. Getting a reminder of how big the world is.
What are you least looking forward to?
I'm nervous about the food. But I'm also adventurous. Things that are pets in America are sometimes foods in other countries. I think that's fascinating. I'm bringing my silverware...
Have you performed in any countries before where English isn’t the first language?
Yes. Spain and Portugal.
How does your act differ overseas to how it is back home?
We are about to find out. I don't have plans to make it much different, but we will let the mood dictate that.
Who are your comedy heroes?
Jerry Clower and Chris Rock.
Who are the best comedians you’ve worked with?
Chris Delia, Joe Rogan, David Spade and Whitney Cummings.
Earlier in your career you were viewed by many as more of a reality star rather than a genuine comedian. What was that like and how did you win over the public/your peers?
Hard work. And a chip on my shoulder.
Where are you heading after China? What’s next for you?
I've got a big tour this fall – Dark Arts Tour (dates here
). And hopefully one day the moon. If it's real...
