The site at 838 Hengshan Lu has been one of cinematic significance for over 50
years. First opened in 1951, it was the first cinema to be built in Shanghai after the establishment of the People' Republic of China, when 300,000RMB was pumped
into its construction. The current cinema, remodelled for the Shanghai Expo in 2010, has an Art Deco
facade though with a distinct Soviet flavour. The three screens, which house
700 seats, have also had a digital revamp, and are showing national releases.
